| Isolators and Circulators are two closely related components. They are multi port devices that utilize ferrite material and strong magnets to create a condition that forces a signal to propagate around a closed loop path. The path may lead to an output port or in the case of the two port version of a Circulator, known as an Isolator, to an internal termination. Thus, an isolator is essentially a circulator with the third port terminated in an internal 50 ohm load. The signal paths and ferrite components sizes are frequency wavelength dependent. High microwave frequency isolators tend to be small, sometimes not much bigger the SMA or K connectors that are mounted to it. Conversely, low frequency isolators tend to be quite large and heavy.
